CRITIC OF THE YEAR
WINNER: Brian Sewell,
Evening Standard
“Awesomely knowledgeable” was how the judges described the
winner. “He writes with absolute authority, is very persuasive
in his views and has a gift for a memorable, funny line.”
Two pieces particularly impressed. One on David Hockney that “nailed
some of the more dubious qualities of modern art”; the other on
Raphael, “a controversy that still rages, months later his piece
appeared”. “Unique, larger than life, he’s the
supreme elitist with the common touch,” said one. “How
I wish I could be so knowledgeable yet so entertaining.”
The winner also receives the Jack Tinker Award, presented in memory
of the Daily Mail’s revered theatre critic
